A Night of Musicianship: Photographing Latin GRAMMY Nominee Sam Reider and Human Hands

Photographing Sam Reider and Human Hands at Stable Hall in San Antonio, in partnership with Musical Bridges Around the World, was a memorable experience and a chance to approach concert photography from a more intentional perspective.
Their performance was not built around constant movement or high-energy stage production. The strength of the show came from the musicianship, the interaction between the performers, and the quieter details that unfolded throughout the set. That gave me the opportunity to focus more on expression, composition, and the connection between the musicians.
I paid close attention to the subtle moments: the concentration during a passage, the way one musician responded to another, and the visual rhythm created by the instruments and stage setup. Those details became just as important as the wider shots of the full group.
Stable Hall was a great setting for this type of performance. The venue has an intimate character that complemented the music, and the lighting helped create a warm, textured atmosphere. I wanted the images to reflect the actual feel of the show rather than make it look more dramatic or energetic than it was.
My approach was patient and deliberate. Instead of reacting to constant movement, I looked for clean compositions, meaningful expressions, and moments that showed the personality of the performance. The slower pace gave me more room to think about framing and create images that felt intentional.
I also wanted the final gallery to have variety without losing the calm, refined character of the show. Wider images helped establish the setting, while tighter photographs focused on individual musicians, instruments, and expressions.
Working with Musical Bridges Around the World on this concert also made the experience more meaningful. Their work brings artists and audiences together through music, and being able to document one of those performances gave me the opportunity to contribute visually to that experience.
Sam Reider and Human Hands delivered a performance that felt thoughtful, detailed, and deeply connected. Photographing the set reinforced something I value about concert photography: every artist should be captured in a way that reflects how the performance actually feels.
For BNC Photo, the goal is not to force every concert into the same visual style. It is to understand the artist, the environment, and the energy of the room, then create images that preserve that experience as naturally as possible.
